Bedroom rugs need to work in proportion with the size of the room and the size of the bed. A rug for a single or three-quarter bed wouldn't work alongside a queen bed. It would need to be longer and wider to maintain equal proportions; otherwise, it will be dwarfed by the bed. It's also not practical to step out of bed onto a rug that's too small.
Best Rug Sizes for a Queen Bed
The first rule of thumb is that the rug should be larger than the bed. A standard-sized queen bed is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. The ideal size for a rug would then be 8 x 10 ft, which overlaps with the rug size for a king bed.
However, you also need to factor in the size of the bedroom. When in the desired place, the rug should be at least six inches away from the walls but not more than two feet away.
A rug placed in a small bedroom could work if it was 5 x 7/8 ft, but this is the smallest you should go with a queen bed. A larger space will look best with a 10 x 12 ft rug.
How to Measure the Rug Size for Your Bed
Here are some tips when measuring the size of a rug:
Do:
- Take the measurements two or three times
- Check door clearances
- Get someone to help you measure, if possible
Don't:
- "Eyeball" the measurements
- Try to save money by opting for a smaller size
We strongly recommend taking the time to measure your bed, bedroom, and rug before making a purchase. It will save you the frustration of living with a rug that doesn't fit well in the space or the money of purchasing one in a different size.
Once you've decided on a size for your rug, you also need to consider the placement of the rug in your bedroom, before you can finally do some shopping.
